Annual Limerick Limerick Wild Geese Festival

It was a pleasure to be asked to attend the Annual Limerick Limerick Wild Geese Festival by Tom O’Brien and the Garryowen Residents Association on Saturday the 11th July 2026.

The festival commemorates the Flight of the Wild Geese following the Treaty of Limerick in 1691 and celebrates the long-standing friendship between Ireland and France.

One of the many events during the festival is the laying of a wreath at the Patrick Sarsfield Statue, John’s Square, which has been restored over the last number of years through the combined tireless efforts of Tom O’Brien and the dedicated volunteers of the Garryowen Residents Association, with the support of Canon Gerard Garrett of St John's Cathedral, Loïc Guyon, Honorary Consul of France (one of the founders of the Limerick Wild Geese Festival), John Moran - Mayor of Limerick City and County Council, and Randel Hodkinson.

The restoration works carried out on the Patrick Sarsfield Statue are a real credit to everyone involved, and the statue and ground works looked spectacular under the wonderful sunshine that we had on Saturday.
